POWER OUTAGE TIPS
Severe weather, falling trees, vehicle accidents, and other unexpected events can cause power outages. Taking a few simple steps before an outage occurs can help keep your family safe and comfortable.
BEFORE AN OUTAGE
- • Assemble an emergency kit with flashlights, extra batteries, a battery-powered radio, first aid supplies, bottled water, and non-perishable food.
• Keep mobile phones, portable chargers, and other essential devices fully charged when severe weather is expected.
• Maintain an emergency supply of fuel, firewood, or other approved heating sources. Store fuels safely away from your home.
• Keep extra blankets available to help stay warm during extended outages.
• Know how to report an outage by calling Hart EMC at 800-241-4109.
DURING AN OUTAGE
- •Check your breakers and determine if neighboring homes are also without power before reporting an outage.
• Stay away from downed power lines and always assume they are energized. Report downed lines immediately to Hart EMC.
• Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. A closed refrigerator can keep food cold for several hours.
• Leave one light turned on so you will know when power has been restored.
• Unplug sensitive electronics and appliances to help protect them from power surges when service is restored.
• If using a generator, operate it outdoors and away from windows, doors, and vents. Never operate a generator inside a home, garage, or enclosed area.
• If using a fuel-burning heater, ensure the area is properly ventilated. Never burn charcoal indoors.
